self-defense school
Jan. 12th, 2026 07:23 pm( Kagura wrap-up )
The building had gone deserted for over a year. Jyn and Cassian put off their renovations of the Falcon to clean it up. It now vaguely resembled a Temple of the Whills and advertised self-defense classes for ages 6 through 16.
The two former child soldiers/survivors had had trouble deciding how young was “too young”. Life made no such considerations. They finally went with those best able to work on actual moves. Younger kids were more suited to general body- and situational-awareness. Still, if someone younger—or older—came in need, they’d quickly get personal attention.
In classes and tutoring, they emphasized that you never started a fight. They were learning how to finish one, or better, get out of one entirely. Like Cassian’s agenda had always been as a recruiter: it wasn’t to militarize anyone but to arm them against a fight they were already in.
Jyn and Cassian were both of the “whatever the hell works” school of combat. The sort of fighting, Jyn had put it, done by semi-feral children turned adults who'd learned how to keep themselves alive in an increasingly hostile galaxy. They’d been raised and trained by myriad teachers (some of whom they could have done with defense against, too). Even when they broke things down into styles, the Darrowans didn’t know them, so the school’s overall method was nicknamed, of course, ‘Rogue combat’.
Popular among the kids and visiting adults were Jyn and Cassian’s sparring demonstrations. They feared it was popularizing violence, but feedback was mostly otherwise and it succeeded in raising awareness.
Jyn and Cassian also kept 'office hours': times between classes when anyone who wanted to talk to someone privately (secretly) could come to them.
Most of the students were Darrowans. Sometimes, transplants walked in.
[ooc: Come one, come all! Sadly, Jyn won't be available for threads, but Cassian is here for anything.]
